Zubair's Rolling
In
a land of plastic money, malls and mania, there once lived a boy named Zubair.
He came from a good family – he would pray his 5 salah, fast in Ramadan, give
charity and he had even been on the sacred journey to Makkah.
He got on well with everyone and was helpful and kind. Everything seemed to be
going well for Zubair, until one day . . . "It all seems so strange – my Zubair
has never acted like this before. He loves going to school and madrassah. But
during this past week, he seems to avoid doing homework. It’s as though he has
to be dragged to school," said Mrs. Ismail.
Her neighbour, Aunty A'isha nodded sympathetically. She knew what it felt like
having 3 young kids at home.
But Mrs. Ismail wasn’t convinced – it was more than just a faze or rage, she
thought to herself. Later that morning, she busied herself in the kitchen,
preparing lunch and tidying up. With the churning of the washing machine
steadily moving on, she sat down and prepared to read her daily tasbih.
As she was humming to herself, she suddenly heard a noise coming from upstairs.
"Who could it be?" she wondered, puzzled. The children were all at school and
their father had already left for the office.
So it was just her and . . . A cold, chilling shiver ran down her spine. Now,
her warm and cosy home suddenly felt hauntingly empty and like something out of
one of Zubair’s horror books. She ran over to Aunty A'isha, shaken, puzzled and
very afraid.
"Quick!" she exclaimed. "There’s someone in my house!" she cried out aloud.
The wailing of the sirens could be heard from a distance and so too, could
Zubair’s dad’s voice, demanding to know what all the fuss was about. The police
shouted out aloud on their loudspeaker, but to no avail. No thief, no creature –
nothing emerged.
There was only one choice – and that was to enter by force. To their utter
amazement, they found a shocked (and convicted!) Zubair, hiding behind the
cupboard. Speechless, he could only hang his head in shame. It was only at Asr
salah, that Zubair told his dad everything that had happened.
"I can’t face my friends!" Zubair’s voice trailed off bitterly.
"Why ever not?! There’s nothing to be ashamed of, is there?" his dad asked,
worriedly.
"It’s just that. . . how can I face my friends if I don’t have ROLLER-BLADES?
You see, I can’t be part of the in-crowd if I don’t have the look!", Zubair
said, despairingly.
The next morning, Zubair and his dad could be seen making their way to the
nearest sports shop.
But, as they were about to step in, a most heart-breaking sight met their eyes .
. . It was of a young boy, with messy hair and tattered clothes, giving Zubair a
small, toothless grin. As Zubair glanced over at this boy, something made him
stop in his tracks and rooted him to the ground. HE HAD NO LEGS !!!
And next to him was a cardboard that said, "Share with others! What you are is
Allah’s gift, what you become is your gift to Allah." Zubair didn’t know where
to turn. He wished that the earth would just open up and swallow him.
Here was someone without legs, while he complained about not having a pair of
roller-blades! Tears welled up in his eyes as he turned away towards the car
park, realising his mistakes.
On reaching home, he read 2 rak’ats of Shukr salah (prayer for Thankfulness to
Allah Ta'ala) and thanked Allah for everything.
Somehow, roller-blades just didn’t top Zubair’s priority list of being cool and
funky. Alhumdulillah, he was grateful for the pair of strong, healthy legs which
Allah had given him.
Appreciate what you have. Thank Allah everyday!
Remember to look at people with less than you in this world and look at those
people who are better in Deen than you are. Don’t take anything for granted!!!
